Title: Grassroots Youth Collaborative – Co-Coordinator
DEADLINE: FRIDAY, September 21st 12:00PM
Reports to: Grassroots Youth Collaborative Membershiop
Status: Contract (1 year) with possibility of extension
Salary: $42,500/year

The Organization
The Grassroots Youth Collaborative (GYC) is a network of culturally diverse youth driven organizations that was initiated in May 2004.
The GYC aims to develop the capacities of young people and youth led
organizations based in the City of Toronto. There are currently 11
GYC members they include: 4Unity Media Arts Productions, Beatz to Da Streetz, Canadian Tamil Youth Development (CanTYD), For Youth Initiative (FYI), Phase 1 Step Team, Rathburn Area Youth (RAY), Regent Park Focus, the Remix Project, Schools Without Borders, the Somali Youth Association of Toronto (SOYAT) and Young Diplomats.
What We Do
The Grassroots Youth Collaborative works to:
? Strengthen the capacity of youth-led organizations to serve our communities
? Provide a space for youth-led organizations to strategize about
issues and share resources and information
? Conduct research and get the message out on how young people can
create their own engagement strategies
? Promote and educate decision makers on the value of youth-led organizations
? Advocate for government policies that empower young people to have
greater control over their own life choices and contribute to their communities
? Participate in social movements and advocate for social change
around issues that affect the participants in our programs What Defines a GYC Organization GYC consists of member organizations. Organization is defined by the GYC as a group of young persons organized for a particular social purpose. To become a member of GYC an organization must:
1. Be not-for-profit.
2. Be based in the City of Toronto and must primarily serve children and youth.
3. Be youth-led, meaning that youth, between the ages of 13 to 29 are fully represented in all areas of the organization and account for 50%
+ of all volunteers and staff. Youth are also in positions of
authority and are significantly represented among board members.
4. Have an annual operating budget below $300,000 before becoming a GYC member.
5. Have an organizational structure which operates at arms-length from a lead or sponsoring agency.
6. Be community based (regional or national groups or excluded from becoming members).
7. Be committed to anti-oppression and anti-racism practices.
8. Be formally approved as a member by the existing GYC membership.

Responsibilities:
• Conduct a needs and asset-based assessment of each GYC member organizations
• Strengthen the GYC network and develop a dynamic strategy for
inter-agency communication and resource sharing
• Support the GYC member organization's day-to-day work that relates
to strategic planning, branding, PR, outreach, networking, event planning and advocacy
• Provide/coordinate workshop opportunities and educational events for
GYC members/participants around issues that directly impact them
• Coordinate events, research and meetings undertaken by the GYC
• Make contact with and link other youth-led initiatives with GYC
member organizations
• Create a stronger link between the work of GYC organizations and
Toronto based/youth-led social movements/actions in the city
• Help the collaborative develop a strategic plan for moving forward
and working together
• Support the other co-coordinator to complete administrative tasks
related to the GYC

Qualifications/Interests:
• Post secondary education in social services field or equivalent
experience an asset
• Experience working with grassroots organizations (with an emphasis
on youth-led organizations)
• Experience writing large grant proposals for different funding
bodies, with some success an asset
• Ability to develop and implement effective evaluation tools
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work well with diverse partners, including youth,
community leaders, funding bodies, and other stakeholders
• Enthusiastic, creative individual
• Event planning skills
• Able to manage budget and resources
• Understanding of youth-related issues in the City of Toronto
(particularly in the communities served by GYC member organizations)
• Knowledge of, and commitment to anti-oppression and anti-racism
• Excellent written, administrative and oral communication skills
• Good strategic planning, analytical, and research skills
• Good organization and time management skills
• Excellent computer skills, experience working with web spaces an asset
• Experience working within the non-profit sector an asset

Note: The Grassroots Youth Collaborative is a youth-led initiative meaning that we give hiring preference to people under the age of thirty (30). We also encourage people who are directly affected by the work undertaken by our member organizations to apply.
